The beautiful reddish-purple flowers of Lathyrus japonicus (photo
to the right) sets off the surrounding vegetation. An area of a few square meters next to the path
at Kramkistesund is for decades the habitat for this species. Flowering period lasts from
beginning of June until well into July. The species can flower again later
in the summer if enough rain falls.
The species is scarce on gravelly and sandy beaches. The
species distribution on earth is bipolar, which means that it occurs in the north of the northern hemisphere and
in the southern part of the southern hemisphere, but not in between.
