Barnacles have a striated calcareous shell. In the middle these crustaceans extend their distinctive brushed legs (cirrer) to capture food from the water. They have in early spring a brief free-living larval stage, before it settles into the water line at many rocky shores. The picture to the right shows the barnacles with two common periwinkles (Littorina) on top.
