Japweed

To algae in the beach zone

To rock shores

Japweed is a brown alga that originates from Japan. From there it spread associated with oyster exports. In the 1990s the species was established  quickly along the Swedish west coast. It grows from the surface to a depth of about ten meters. This species can be up to a few meters long and has many quite small bladders.

Japweed can be transported long distances by streams, thanks to the floating bubbles. It is self-fertile and therefore a single plant can give rise to new stocks. The species thrives in flowing water.
