Vasakyrkan
A beautiful building of granite from
Stångehuvud in Gothenburg

Vasakyrkan (The Vasa church) is situated in the city district Vasastaden in Gothenburg. It is built of granite from Stångehuvud and one of the largest granite churches in Sweden. After an arcitectural competition it was decided that the church would be drawn by the architect Yngve Rasmussen.

Vasakyrkan was built in the years 1905 to 1908. 5000 cubic meters of facade stone were shipped during this time from Stångehuvud to the site of the church building between Vasaparken and Hvitfeldtska gymnasiet. The cost of the church was 560 000 swedish crowns.

It is a monumental building constructed in the neo-Romanesque style with some artwork details in Art Nouveau style with elements of national romanticism. The church has two parts with a large open side balcony to the south. Round arches and window frames in the Romanesque style adorn the church.

The church was built during a time when a number of stone houses were built in Vasastaden. Large migration in the district meant that there was a need of a larger church.

Vasakyrkan was inaugurated with great fanfare by Bishop Edward Rodhe on the Palm Sunday April 4, 1909.
